ANIMAL WELFARE REVISION EU

 07/07/2021_
The Commission has just published the Inception Impact Assessment for the future EU animal welfare legislation:
https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/12950-Animal-welfare-revision-of-EU-legislation_en
This initiative aims to update EU animal welfare rules to increase the role of recent science-based analysis, broaden their scope and make them easier to enforce – generally increasing the level of animal welfare in the EU.
It is an open consultation, rather than any kind of questionnaire and you can attach your comments by PDF, which is always a good idea given the limited number of characters.
The document includes explicit references to fur animals, which are setting off an alarm bell with me. I’m still going through it, but I would suggest that the EU FFA members get on a call to align ourselves strategically on our asks.
My guess is that T=he best we’re probably be able to get out of them is to establish welfare standards, like in Germany, which would make it unviable to keep fur animals. We need to be crystal clear that any WelFur style proposals are unacceptable.
The feedback period is open to 3rd August. Doubtless many of you will want to respond to other aspects of the document regarding other species.
